She has dark brown almost black hair that when loose hangs to mid back, though she mostly keeps it piled atop her head and cascading around her face is loops. Though small, her frame is athletic, belying a strength that isn’t normally anticipated by her opponents.

Her brown eyes shine with a touch of amber when light hits them directly, and are quick to move from mischievous to deadly. She wears well fitted trousers, vests, corsets, and shirts, bucking against the idea that now she is a noblewoman she should be wearing dresses.

Josc is a free spirit. She sees the world around her as her playground, and often crosses boundaries of both legal and social persuasions. If someone is not smart enough to pick up on her games, then they are not deserving of whatever item Josc has liberated from their person or home.

She is quick to laugh, fast to talk, and often finds it easy to make friends. Her heart is in the right place most of the time and she does her best to help those around her lead a happier life. That could mean donating some coin to their cause or taking them to the Blooming Rose to unwind.

While good is always on her to do list, she does not buck against doing bad when it means helping her family survive. Josc has done some things she's not proud of to keep her family fed, but she will never regret them. She knows how the world works, and sometimes a little blood needs to be spilled so those you love can keep on carrying on.

Josc is utterly devoted to her family, and the loss of both her siblings -- one to the Grey Wardens, and one to death -- is taking a toll on her. She feels immense guilt over it, and often agrees with her mother when the accusations come. She works hard to make sure her mother is safe -- as well as her uncle though not openly.

When pissed off, hell hath no fury like Joscelyn Hawke. She will explode first and apologize later. She learned to react and act instead of verbally communicate from her little brother, who she often got into scraps with when they argued. It didn't matter he was over a foot taller than her.

Joscelyn was the first born of Malcolm and Leandra Hawke. Her birth was uneventful, and occurred in Amaranthine while they were living in a small hovel within the city limits. It was not long after her birth though that the Hawke's moved on. Such was their life, even after the family grew.

Her siblings were born three years after her, and for a while they were able to stay in one spot. That is until Bethany manifested magic. The Hawke's had to uproot again, and Josc couldn't help but be a little jealous of all the attention dear old dad gave her little sister after that.

That's when she started sneaking away at night, and hiding in trees. She was the best climber outside of Lothering, she was certain of it. There were many times Leandra would find her well over fifteen feet off the ground and in a panic. At least it got her attention and some great strength in her legs.

She tried to follow along with the lessons that were given to Carver, picking up a wooden stick and swinging a sword with both her hands. She found it easier to use one in both hands later on when learning tricks of the trade from the thieves in Lothering. They weren't a good bunch, but young Josc made them laugh so they tolerated her presence while teaching her a few things.

When her father died, things got harder on the Hawke's. This is when Josc found herself getting more involved with the local thieves. While Carver worked the farm and Bethany took care of Leandra, Josc was out taking on mercenary jobs of less than savory circumstances. It made her coin and that coin bought food for her family and supplies for the farm.

Then the Blight hit.

What happened next was a whirlwind of strange and unusual things that even Josc has a hard time believing actually happened to her. Somehow Carver had made it home from Ostagar with a wounded mabari in tow, and the Hawke family was on the run. One of her siblings died at the hands of an Ogre during their flight. Thanks to a riddle spouting witch, the remaining Hawkes, the mabari named Algernon, and a woman named Aveline was able to make it to Gwaren and take a ship to Kirkwall.

The next few years were quite a ride. Gamlen -- her uncle -- had to practically sell them to a mercenary company for a year to even gain access to the city. Hawke learned a lot from the group, perfecting her weapon skills as well as her sharp tongue. The family struggled during this time because all the money they were making with the group was going to pay their debt off.

Once they were released from that debt, they struck out on their own. Josc met quite a few people during this time, and one in particular got her involved in something big. Varric Tethras wanted her to become partner with his brother in a Deep Roads expedition.

During this time, she was able to break into the old Amell estate and find the will of her grandparents. Their mother was upset over Gamlen's lies, but excited to see if they could get their wealth and status back. She also met a man named Henry, who she had a brief fling with. This resulted in an unintentional pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage months down the road after a mugging. Henry had left not long after their pairing, and she would not see him again until many years later.

Soon after the money had been raised and a way into the Deep Roads had been found. Josc could not bring herself to leave her living sibling behind, despite the pleading from their mother.

The decision turned into the second thing she regretted in her life, and now her other sibling was sent to join the Grey Wardens. The expedition otherwise proved fruitful, despite Varric's brother locking them in the Thaig. They found riches beyond the simple idol that Bartrand had stolen, including the dragonbone sword Josc would come to covet.

Leandra was distraught when Josc returned home alone. Even though they had regained the Amell estate and the status that went along with it, the rift between Josc and her mother grows ever wider.

For now, Josc is trying to adjust to being nobility while still finding herself at the Hanged Man most evenings. She still takes on jobs for the fun of it, and has a stake in a local mine with an Orlesian fellow she met in the market. The actions of the templars in town bother her, but without Bethany being around she doesn't pay much attention. She's enjoying her bit of fame and her newfound wealth.
