“You should get a good story out of it, if nothing else.” Celeste took everything back to the desk and then stretched out on the bed again, extending a hand. Nicolette took it and eased herself round until she was on her belly, one leg draped over Celeste’s and the hand not holding her wine resting on the other woman’s chest. Celeste was warm and Nicolette absently swirled patterns over her skin with her fingertips. “It's probably going to be dangerous, though. No 'probably' about it, really. He makes no bones about that part, though he's playing coy with the details. How are you at fighting?”

Nicolette tensed, which would probably be answer enough for Celeste. Of course there would be combat involved in something like this. Also, if her genre knowledge had not failed her, a variety of potentially lethal traps, rivals for the prize who would stop at nothing to get there first, and possibly a dragon. She was reasonably confident that the last one would not be an issue, but the others could well be.

While it might cost her involvement in this, it was better to be honest rather than trying for bravado and getting injured – or worse, anybody else injured – through her incompetence. “Limited. I had a little training with daggers when I was a child, and a knight in Highever took the time to refine my technique. I can shoot a bow reasonably well.” That had been necessary for hunting.

“I find combat frightening,” she admitted. “We had a few incidences on the road when I was young, and while trouble has come to me I have usually managed to evade it without violence.” Or other people had stepped in for her. She was not likely to forget the crunch of her captor’s bones as Merrill’s stone had slammed into him. “I have defended myself on a few occasions.”Nicolette indicated the white scar that ran along her collarbone. “This is from a bandit who attacked the caravan I was travelling with at the time. I managed to knock him out.”

She had probably talked herself right out of the invitation on this quest, and if she had she would be bitterly disappointed in herself, but lying and getting caught out later would be far worse. The memory of the slavers had made her uncomfortable again, and she concentrated instead on the feel of Celeste’s skin under her fingers, gaze lowered for the moment.

Nicolette readily took Celeste's hand and nestled close, one leg twined around the sailor's, one hand holding her wine glass and the other resting between Celeste's breasts, the light trace of fingertips on bare skin creating a pleasant frisson.

The minstrel was quite willing to join in the treasure hunt, but when Celeste asked her about her combat skills, the subtle tension in the slender frame answered before she spoke.

“Limited,” she admitted simply. “I had a little training with daggers when I was a child, and a knight in Highever took the time to refine my technique. I can shoot a bow reasonably well.”

“Bows are handy,” Celeste told her. That would keep her out of the thick of melee combat, as well.

“I find combat frightening,” she went on. “We had a few incidences on the road when I was young, and while trouble has come to me I have usually managed to evade it without violence. I have defended myself on a few occasions.” She gestured to a scar that followed the curve of her collarbone. “This is from a bandit who attacked the caravan I was travelling with at the time. I managed to knock him out.”

"Good for you," Celeste congratulated her, but it was plain that the memory troubled the other woman.

She fell silent then, her breathing ever so slightly uneven and her eyes downcast, fingers still making absent patterns over Celeste's breastbone. The sailor shifted downward until she was facing Nicolette, two fingers under her chin lifting those beautiful eyes to meet hers.

“I can find a fighter on any corner in any city,” Celeste told her. “A quick mind isn't so common, and that's of far more use to me. If I know what you're capable of, I can plan accordingly.” Angling her head, she brushed a kiss along the line of the scar, then pressed the minstrel onto her back. “There's also the fact that you are very good company, and that's even less common.”

Taking the wine glass from her hand, Celeste tipped it to spill a few drops into the hollow at the base of Nico's throat, then bent to claim it, her tongue lapping gently at the soft skin, feeling the flutter of the other's pulse against her lips.

“Mmmmm.” She gave an approving hum, lifting her head and smiling. “Definitely a good pairing.”

Nicolette felt Celeste slide fingers under her chin, and lifted her head at the gentle pressure, her eyes meeting the calm, mossy-green gaze of the captain. “I can find a fighter on any corner in any city. A quick mind isn't so common, and that's of far more use to me. If I know what you're capable of, I can plan accordingly.” Celeste dipped her head and her lips brushed the slightly puckered skin of the scar, eliciting a shiver, and then turned Nicolette over, pinning her against the sheets.

Nicolette had no complaints about this whatsoever, and her attention was quickly diverted from trying to stop the wine spilling as Celeste leaned over her. “There's also the fact that you are very good company, and that's even less common.”

It would have taken a much worse week to keep Nicolette from enjoying both Celeste stretching out over her and the compliment.

“I find it easy when I am with people whose company I enjoy so much.” She traced the line of Celeste’s jaw with a fingertip, and then the captain claimed the glass from her and spilled a few drops over her skin. The cool liquid was enough to cause a brief jolt of heat, and then Celeste followed it with a kiss to her throat. Not truly a kiss, her tongue curled over the wine in a pattern familiar from a few moments previously, and Nicolette rose beneath her, arching into the sensation with a moan.

“Mmmm.” Nicolette looked down to find green eyes glinting wickedly at her. Definitely a good pairing.”

“I am glad I please your palate so well.” Nicolette hooked a leg around Celeste’s hip once more, but this time used to gain an advantage, trusting the captain to keep a hold on the wine as she flipped them and then knelt astride Celeste’s hips. She closed her fingers over the hand holding the glass and leaned in for a long, deep kiss, before pulling back enough to speak, but not so far that her lips did not brush those of the other woman’s. The darkness was rolling back again, and hopefully this time it would remain at bay. The dangers of the past weres far less interesting than the promises of the present and future. “I think I would like to see well it goes with you.”

She reclaimed the glass, but did not halt at a few droplets at the neck; the wine was sent on a path down to one breast, then downwards to the navel. Nicolette set the glass aside on the table, and started to follow the path she had set with tongue, teeth, lips and fingers.
